What Does the Text Say?
When we are first introduced to Jacob is at his birth, the second born of twins, grasping at his brother Esau’s heel [Jacob means deceiver]. Next, Jacob gets his brothers birthright by taking advantage of him when he is starving and then conspires with his mother to steal his brothers blessing .When Esau becomes angry and threatens to kill his brother Jacob, he is sent away to his uncle Laban to find a wife. Through a series of deceptions from Laban and various blessings from God, Jacob grows up and realizes he must make amends with his brother Esau, on his journey he has the encounter with the angel. When ask what his name is, Jacob demonstrates his growth by telling the angel his name is Jacob

1. Jacob is on his way to meet Esau, one night while he was alone he encounter a man [an angel] and wrestles with him
2. the contest continues all night and as day break, the angel tells Jacob to let him go, but Jacob refuses unless the angel blesses him
3. The angel touches Jacob’s thigh and it becomes out of joint, but Jacob will still not let go
4. The angel ask, what is your name, and he replies, Jacob
5. The angel gives Jacob a new name, Israel and departs
How Does This Help Me Today?

Jacob tried scheming against his brother to get ahead in life, even his mother aided in his schemes. But he could not find the inner peace and contentment he sought and in the end, he himself becomes deceived.

Our life as a believer belongs to the Lord and He has this incredible plan for us, but we must seek Him and His direction. Perhaps Jacob could have avoided some of the pain by seeking God first, perhaps we can learn from Jacob about life choices and seek God first rather than only when the storm come
