MEMORY VERSES / Ephesians 3: 19-20
20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. 21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever. Amen _________________________________________________
Background
Nehemiah was a Jewish captive in Babylon during the 70 years of exile, and has risen in position to being the cup bearing for the King Artaxerxes. Nehemiah learned from a friend that Jerusalem was still in ruins, after several days of fasting and prayer he approached the king with a plan to allow him to go to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls, and King Artaxerxes granted him permission to go and provided for the supplies to rebuild the walls.

As you read chapters 8-9 of Nehemiah you are given a picture of the children of Israel and their newly developed hunger for the Word of God and for doing what it said.

8:1-The people were unified in their thoughts and desires

8:2-All the men, women and children old enough to understand were there

8:3-Ezra stood before the people and read for 3-4 hours all the Words of the
Law and as Ezra praised God, so did the people, hands lifted up and
then bowing to the ground

8:7-after the reading of the Law, the Levites, instructed the people into the
meaning of each line, of each word so that they fully understood

8:9-10-the children of Israel mourned at hearing the words and knowing
that they and their ancestors’ had not followed God, but Nehemiah
stopped the mourning and told the people to instead celebrate a new
beginning
8:13-18-As an acting of humility and worship, the children of Israel, followed the law and built temporary shelters in and around the city and for the next 7 days lived in those shelters to be reminded of the sacrifices their ancestors had weathered to come to the Promised Land.

9:1-38
The children of Israel assemble again 14 days after the Celebration of Shelters, and for 3 hours again hear the Words of the Law of God, and then for the next 3 hours confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors-

They reflected on how God had rescued their ancestors from Egypt, opening up the Red Sea for them to cross and totally destroying the army of Egypt.

Reflected on how God had feed them and given them water during their journey, had He had given them the Law, and yet how they had rebelled against God, building golden calves to worship-and how even then, when they repented God forgave them.

Reflected on the 40 year journey in the desert because they did not trust God at first to help them conquer the Promised Land, how during that time their clothes and their shoes did not wear out.

Reflected on how God overcame their enemies to allow them to conquer the Promise Land and how during their time in the Promised Land there were continued periods of following God and not following God, until finally God allowed the Babylonians to come and conquer them.

Now they had been returned to the Promised Land, the Temple had been rebuilt and they had just completed the walls around Jerusalem and finished building their own houses-Now they had committed to following God, to obeying His commands and not having any other false gods to worship.

Today we could learn a great deal from this time period in the Promised Land and what it takes to get right with God and experience a renewal, a refreshing , a restoration of our spirit with God’s Spirit- the same things hold true today as they did then,
-Confess Your Sins-Repent
-Spend time with God hearing/studying His Word, and time in prayer
-Finally making a conscience decision to follow and obey God

ADDITIONAL BIBLE VERSES TO REVIEW
Psalm 139:13-16
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Ephesians 1:4-5
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—
Ephesians 2:10
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Psalm 139:1-4
O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
Colossians 2:13-14
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.
John 1:12-13
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
Galatians 4:6-7
Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.
