Memory Verse/1 Peter 2:16-17
“16Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.”
What Does the Scripture Say?

The apostle Paul and his traveling companion Silas were doing God’s work, they were traveling throughout Asia Minor, revisiting the churches that had been established on Paul’s first Missionary Journey, the churches were being strengthen by their visit, and then a change of direction occurred.

During the night Paul saw a vision of s man from Macedonia –southern Greece, [across the Aegean Sea] asking Paul to come and visit them. The next morning Paul and Silas changed direction from their original plans and headed to Macedonia stopping first in the Roman City of Philippi.

While in Philippi, Paul and Silas encountered a girl who was demon possessed, and demonstrated an ability to tell fortunes for others, and this made her master very rich. When this girl noticed Paul and Silas she became disruptive-loud, shouting “ the men are servants of the Most high God and they have come to tell you how to be saved”, Paul confronted the girl and demanded the demon inside her to leave, and at once the demon left and the girl could no longer tell fortunes.

This made her master very mad for he had lost his means to make easy money, so he complained to the authorities that these two men were causing an uproar in the marketplace, so the authorities had them arrested, beaten and put in jail. [Note it was illegal for a Roman Citizen to be beaten without first a trial and Paul was a Roman Citizen]

While in jail around midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and SUDDENLY, a violent earthquake occurred causing all the prison doors to open. The jailer came into the prison, saw all the doors were open and thinking all the prisoners escaped was about to kill himself when Paul called out to him. Paul explained that all the prisoners were still there, the jailer came quick to see for himself and when he came to the cell where Paul and Silas were, he had them brought out and trembling ask them, “SIRS, WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?”, AND THEY REPLIED, BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND YOU WILL BE SAVED”. The jailer took Paul and Silas out of the prison and into his own home and cared for them and had the wounds cleaned and bandaged. Listening to Paul and Silas the jailer and his entire family and servants were saved that night.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME?

Being close to God, serving Him and being open to hear His voice, Paul and Silas made a difference in the Kingdom of God, more and more people came to know Jesus as Savior. This is true freedom, freedom in our Spirit and Mind. In this same manor today were salute and honor those who have served in the military, police, firefighters and any others who have put themselves in harm’s way to preserve our physical freedom, particularly those who have sacrificed their lives so that we can be here today, in America and South Korea, FREE to live, to worship, to enjoy life.

ADDITIONAL BIBLE VERSES TO REVIEW

Romans 12:1-2
1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
1 Corinthians 8:9

Galatians 2:20-21
20I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”
Galatians 5:13
13You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. 14The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
Ephesians 4:20-24
20You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
